Presentation on Political Polarization and Place in the North American Heartland with Professor Ann Oberhauser
Welcome to a presentation about political polarization by Ann Oberhauser, Professor of Sociology and Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Iowa State University and Adlerbertska Visiting Professor of Sustainable Development at the School of Business, Economics and Law.
Ann Oberhauser will present a quantitative analysis of voting patterns in the US state of Iowa, and the ’American Heartland’ more broadly. The aim is to examine the significance of social, economic, and geographic indicators in this changing U.S. political culture. These political trends are similar to the British vote to exit the European Union and other shifts toward more populist, nationalist, and anti-immigrant political candidates in Europe.

About Ann Oberhauser
Ann Oberhauser is Professor of Sociology and Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Iowa State University. Her research focuses on feminist economic geography, gender and globalization, and critical development studies with an emphasis on rural economic strategies in Appalachia, sub-Saharan Africa, and more recently Iowa.
Ann Oberhauser holds a PhD in Geography from Clark University and was, before moving to Iowa, Professor at the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University. Her recent works include the co-authored book, Feminist Spaces: Gender and Geography in a Global Context (2017) and a co-edited book with Ibipo Johnston-Anumonwo Global Perspectives on Gender and Space (2014).
Her teaching specialties include feminist theory and research, gender and globalization, development studies, and gender and work. Dr. Oberhauser is a member of the International Geographical Union Commission on Gender and currently serves as the treasurer of this organization.
