Martin Shanahan visiting professor in Economic History

Martin ShanahanMartin Shanahan has been appointed visiting professor in Economic History within the Visiting Professors Programme (VPP) at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Martin Shanahan has been a Professor at the School of Commerce at the University of South Australia since 2013. His employment as visiting professor in Economic History at the Unit for Economy and Society comprises 10 % of a fulltime position over three years, from January 2019 to December 2021.

Martin Shanahan is an internationally leading researcher in Business History and Economic History, as well as studying aspects of International Business and Trade, competition policy and involuntary labour. His unique skills in Economic History, Economics and Law will contribute to both the Unit for Economic History and the School of Business, Economics and Law.

Together with Susanna Fellman, Professor in Business History at the School of Business, Economics and Law, he has already begun a collaboration examining international cartels and their relationship with national governments, and they will continue this research. Professor Shanahan has also begun discussions with Klas Rönnbäck, Associated Professor in Economic History at the School of Business, Economics and Law on issues of aboriginal labour, and its role in the international cattle trade sector.

The visiting professors programme (VPP) is a product of strategic partnerships between the business community in western Sweden and the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. In order to strengthen the quality and international competitiveness of the School, corporate donors have supported the establishment of a visiting professor programme to engage leading professors in the fields of business, economics and law from around the globe.
