About Dimitrios Theodoridis

My research interests lie within the interplay between trade and natural resources with a special focus on the history of colonialism, industrialization and slavery in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

In my doctoral dissertation Development Constrained, through a series of four research essays I examined the changing role of natural resources, and specifically that of land, for economic development during the era of the first industrialization. Land continued to be of key importance for economic development in the nineteenth century but land constraints could be abolished with changes in the energy regime through the use of coal (vertical expansion), combined with  trade expansion and the colonization of new uncharted territories (horizontal expansion). This thesis examines the relative significance of the latter two pathways for relieving land constraints, for giving rise to particular trade activities and for explaining the long-term sustainability of the industrial socio-economic system that emerged in the nineteenth century.
