Academic Sleeping Beauties: Academic breakthrough innovations with delayed recognition

What is the project about?

Technological sleeping beauties are breakthrough inventions that experience delayed recognition, like an important patent that does not receive attention in the early period of its lifetime.

In this project we aim at understanding the causes and consequences of academic sleeping beauties, that is to say, sleeping beauties authored by academic inventors. If these important academic inventions are neglected because of diffusion failures that academic researchers face when patenting and commercializing their research outputs, the sleep of the patent may be delaying further technological development. In such a case, universities can tackle the problem by implementing strategies to increase visibility and facilitate commercialization of academic production.

In what way does your project matter (or influence our thinking)?

  • This project intends to find out whether important academic innovations are being ignored, delaying further technological development, and what can be done in such a case.
  • Universities may not be providing their researchers with all the necessary tools for the diffusion and commercialization of their inventions.
