Postgraduate students appointed to a doctoral studentship shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. A doctoral studentship shall be a full-time post. The appointment may be for a part-time post if a third-cycle student so requests, but for no less than 50 per cent of a full-time post and only after approval by the Head of Department.

Departmental duties

Doctoral studentships commonly include some form of departmental work, such as administration, research or teaching. The departmental duties may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post. Twenty per cent of a full-time post corresponds to one full workday per week, but the work can also be carried out in a more concentrated manner for extended periods. If you are requested to perform departmental duties, the extent of the work must be documented in the individual study plan. It is important that the total study period be extended in proportion to the time worked.

Employment period

The maximum duration of a doctoral studentship is eight years. However, the period may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time postgraduate studies. The employment period may be extended under certain circumstances, such as if the student has been on parental leave.
