Research
My main research areas and interests include

a) Outdoor recreation planning and management

b) Physical planning, MSP and ICZM

c) Human-nature interaction

d) Environmental psychology

e) Landscape research

I mostly work with outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism in relation to natural resource planning and management, why my research often has a distinct applied research character. Particular interests in this regard include visitor management and monitoring, and the important role and relevance of social science within area planning and management. As a development and extension of this focus, I also work a lot with physical planning activities, e.g. regional planning and comprehensive planning. Examples include various urban and rural planning themes, such as coastal and marine planning and green-blue planning. I study both urban contexts and peripheral areas and islands. Most of my research is based around the Swedish west coast, but I have experience from other parts of Sweden as well as Norway, Denmark, New Zealand, Germany, the US and Canada.

Methodologically, I place myself mainly within the qualitative research tradition. I am also a dedicated field worker who promotes the use of fieldwork, both in my research and in my teaching. In my fieldwork, I often argue for the use of mixed-method strategies and discuss pros and cons in relation to this.

Theoretically, I am interested in the concepts of tourism and outdoor recreation and how they are understood and have developed in different parts of the world. I also have a keen interest in landscape theory with an emphasis on different landscape perceptions and experiences, uses and understandings. The concepts of nature and place, including human-nature relations and interactions as well as environmental psychology and connectedness, are particular theoretical interest areas of mine. Finally, I work a lot with applied theory, especially in connection to my work with physical and environmental planning. Examples include planning and management frameworks such as Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC), the Recreative Opportunity Spectrum (ROS), Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP). All frameworks include links to adaptive and sustainable planning and management.

In my research, I aim to do and contribute with inter-, multi-, and trans-disciplinary activities and experiences, mostly in relation to my collaborations with researchers within the marine sciences, social sciences and environmental sciences.
