Supervisors

Each postgraduate student is entitled to supervision during the entire duration of his/her studies. At least two supervisors shall be appointed by the Head of Department no later than one month following the admission decision. Their names must be indicated in the individual study plan.

The supervisors’ roles and education

One of the supervisors is appointed principal supervisor; the others are appointed assistant supervisors. The student’s preferences must be considered when appointing supervisors. At least one of the supervisors must have completed the University’s training in supervision of postgraduate students or equivalent training at another higher education institution. At least one of the supervisors must be an associate professor (docent) or equivalent. Supervisors may be recruited from other higher education institutions and also from outside academia.

The supervisors must be connected to the University either through employment or assignment contract. The student must have access to continuous contact with the supervisors for discussion and feedback throughout the thesis work. The supervisors shall strive to introduce the student into the national and international researcher community. Additional assistant supervisors may be appointed at any time if deemed appropriate.

Change of supervisors

The postgraduate student has the right to change his/her principal and assistant supervisors. This should be addressed to the Head of Department. The ISP must be updated if a supervisor is changed. The student should, as far as possible, be enabled to continue his/her studies with the focus stated in the previous version of the ISP.
Withdrawal of supervisors and other resources

A postgraduate student who substantially neglects his/her undertakings in the ISP may lose the right to supervision and other study resources according to the Higher Education Ordinance 6.30-31. Only the Vice-Chancellor can decide on such a matter.
