Om Mirek Dymitrow

Primary interest areas
... include critical, historical, political, social, cultural and landscape geography; Science and Technology Studies (STS).

Current research
... is concerned with conceptualization of the rural-urban distinction in the face of the progressive rural-urban blurring by focusing on the relationships between material and social morphologies as well as the rural-urban discourse present in various European contexts. Research interests also include problems and causes of social deprivation in the face of overarching sustainability goals.

Area of concentration:
Although the outdatedness of the rural-urban dichotomy as an intersubjective analytical concept is widely acknowledged, it is still largely sustained throughout the society within a wide range of situations. The starting point is that due to increasing rural-urban blurring (and thus increased subjectivity and solipsism involved in this process), there is an ever greater likelihood that current understandings of ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ as used in formal contexts (legislation, policy, land use, funding, etc.) may not reflect the societal needs they purport to address, and that unreflected uses of these concepts may get in the way of making sound planning, design and development decisions. Moreover, reducing complexity to simplicity for the sake of convenience (stereotypification) may inadvertently lead to exclusions.

My research investigates situations where the rural-urban distinction might be problematic. More specifically, it looks into the contexts of how rural-urban discourses are construed and used today, and what reactions and tensions they may spawn. Although the situations studied are of various character (different aspects, scales and actors) the overarching aim is to look into how the discourses about reality/urbanity are interlinked, what shapes them, to what extent they converge across the scope of their situatedness, and to what extent they concur with the physical space generally referred to as ‘rural’ and ‘urban’. By so doing, I aim to elucidate the problematic nature of rural-urban thinking through the use of concrete examples from settings where the rural-urban distinction still plays an important role. In the broadest sense, it provides an updated critique of unreflected or misinformed usages of 'rural' and 'urban' as naturalized analytical and planning categories.
